What size rug for a dining table?

The 24 inch rule
Bed Bath & Beyond says a dining rug should extend at least 24 in beyond the chairs when they're pulled out.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] Wayfair puts it as at least 24 in and no more than 36 in past each table edge, measured with any leaf in, and suggests 12 to 18 in of floor to the walls.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] The Home Depot says all chair legs should stay on the rug when the chairs are pulled back, and suggests 8 × 10 or larger.[3 · Oct 29, 2026] Designers quoted by Homes & Gardens give 18 to 24 in as the minimum.[4 · Oct 29, 2026]

The charts don't all agree. Rugs.net's 6 × 9 for a 36 × 48 table leaves 18 in at the ends, less than the 24 in rule, while Lowe's tends to land closer to it. When in doubt, use the 24 in arithmetic.
Round and square tables
Match the rug to the table shape and add about 24 in all around: Lowe's pairs a table up to 36 in across with a 7 ft round or square rug, 48 in with 8 ft, 60 in with 9 ft and 72 in with 10 ft.[5 · Oct 29, 2026] Wayfair gives 6 ft for a 24 in two-seat table, 8 ft for a 48 in four-seat table and 10 ft for a 72 in table seating up to six.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] More on the round rug sizes page.
