What size rug under a bed?
For a queen bed, a 7 × 10 or 8 × 10 ft rug set crosswise under the lower two-thirds of the bed is the usual pick. A king needs 8 × 10 to 9 × 12, and a twin 6 × 9 to 7 × 10.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]

The rule
The rug should reach 18 to 24 in beyond each side of the bed.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] The Home Depot says at least 24 in, with the rug under the bed's front legs.[3 · Oct 29, 2026] Placing it under the bottom two-thirds of the bed leaves room for nightstands on the bare floor.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
Rug size by bed size
Our arithmetic uses Sleep Foundation's mattress dimensions.[4 · Oct 29, 2026] Across the bed: mattress width plus 24 in each side. Depth: two-thirds of the mattress length plus 24 in past the foot. Then the smallest standard size that covers both, laid with its long side across the bed, within a 2 in margin.[3 · Oct 29, 2026][1 · Oct 29, 2026][2 · Oct 29, 2026]
| Bed | Mattress | Rug needed (across × depth) | Smallest standard size | Lowe's chart |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in | 7 ft 2 in × 6 ft 2 in | 6 × 9 ft | 6 × 9 to 7 × 10 |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 in | 7 ft 2 in × 6 ft 5 in | 7 × 10 ft | Not listed |
| Full | 54 × 75 in | 8 ft 6 in × 6 ft 2 in | 6 × 9 ft | 7 × 10 to 8 × 10 |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in | 9 ft × 6 ft 5 in | 7 × 10 ft | 7 × 10 to 8 × 10 |
| King | 76 × 80 in | 10 ft 4 in × 6 ft 5 in | 8 × 11 ft | 8 × 10 to 9 × 12 |
| California king | 72 × 84 in | 10 ft × 6 ft 8 in | 7 × 10 ft | Not listed |
Lowe's lists a twin as 39 × 75 in; Sleep Foundation gives 38 × 75 in. With 18 in instead of 24 in per side, a size smaller often works.
Other bedroom layouts
- Just the bed: a 6 × 9 can sit under the bed alone; an 8 × 10 suits a queen or king with nightstands.[2 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Runners on each side: a 2 × 6 ft runner on each side of the bed.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] Lowe's suggests 3 × 5 or 4 × 6 on each side for any bed size.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Foot of the bed: a 3 × 5 or 4 × 6.[2 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Full bed: Safavieh suggests a 5 × 8 under the lower two-thirds, set crosswise; 8 × 10 or 9 × 12 for a queen or king; and 9 × 12 for two twins side by side.[5 · Oct 29, 2026]
- King: a designer quoted by Homes & Gardens suggests 8 × 11; another says a guest queen can take a 5 × 8 on the lower third.[6 · Oct 29, 2026]
